The Land of the Giants

(Originally posted on WP 8/7/20.)

I have always grown heirloom veg, organically.  Tomatoes and zucchini have been  favorites, although I also grew asparagus, snow peas, filet beans, lettuces, spinach, and basil.

My favorite zucchini are these little round Ronde de Nice.

Picked small, they’re delicious, more so than the typical long green zuke, though hubby says he tastes no difference.  It has been 11 yrs however, since we’ve had the Rondes, as try as I might, I cannot get the Rondes to grow here in this odd, seaside climate.  So, this year, I broke down and ordered plain ole zucchini seeds.

And they grew.  And boy did they flower.  Huge flowers.  And we’ve actually gotten zucchini to eat this year.

This one I picked yesterday, much larger than I prefer them, but you know how it is with green veg surrounded by green foliage, it can be easy to miss them.

And, boy did I miss this one!

A 3 pounder!  That’s a lotta fried zucchini patties. (Which DD and her beau gobbled a plate of the other day, with the mayo/lemon/herb sauce that goes with.  He said he never knew zucchini could taste this good.  Ah, buttering up mom, but he nailed it – it’s one of our preferred ways to eat this particular vegetable.

Hubby asked how I could have missed it.  I check the beds every day, and there’s only 7 large-enough zucchini plants.  Blame it on the eyesight, or blame it on the back or the hiatal hernia that’s been acting up lately, take your pick!  *Maybe* if I had straw to put around each plant, for the veg to rest upon, as they grow low to the ground, maybe I’d see them sooner.  Yet another reason to have taller raised beds!

Onward,
Dawn
